Calculate return on investment (ROI), annualized returns, and payback period. Free ROI calculator for sellers, freelancers, and investors.
ROI — return on investment — is the one number that tells you whether putting money into something was actually worth it. Ad campaign, new product line, bulk inventory purchase, side business: punch in what you spent and what came back, and this calculator shows your true return, your annualized return (so a 3-month win and a 2-year grind can be compared fairly), and how long it took to earn your money back.
ROI of 100% means you doubled your money. 0% means you broke exactly even. Negative means you lost money — the calculator will say so plainly. The scenario table is the part most people skip and shouldn't: if revenue lands 20% lower than hoped, does the investment still make sense? If the answer is no, your plan is fragile.
For small business moves, most owners want to see at least a 25–30% ROI to justify the risk and effort. Below that, a savings account with zero stress starts looking competitive. Annualized ROI above 15% is genuinely strong for anything that took real work.
Profit is the amount of money you made (revenue minus costs). ROI is that profit expressed as a percentage of what you invested — so a $2,000 profit on a $4,000 investment is a 50% ROI, but the same $2,000 on a $40,000 investment is only 5%.
Because time matters. A 20% return in 3 months is far better than 20% over 3 years. Annualized ROI converts any return into an equivalent yearly rate so investments of different lengths can be compared apples to apples.
