Shipping is where many sellers quietly lose money. The trap is dimensional weight: couriers don't just weigh your parcel — they measure it, and a big light box can be billed like a heavy one. This estimator calculates your true billable weight, compares three delivery methods on your courier's actual rate card, and answers the big strategic question: can you afford to offer free shipping?
Free shipping converts — that's not debatable. The question is whether your margins survive it. The rule this tool applies: if absorbing shipping leaves you 15%+ margin, go for it. Between 5–15%, offer it only above an order threshold (so bigger baskets subsidize the cost). Below 5%, charge shipping separately — no amount of conversion lift fixes negative unit economics.
Smaller boxes are the easiest win — dimensional weight punishes empty air. Negotiate rates once you ship 50+ parcels a month; couriers almost always have unpublished volume tiers. And always compare the total (shipping + packaging), not just the per-kg rate.
It's the courier industry's way of charging for bulky, light parcels: (Length × Width × Height) ÷ a divisor (usually 5000). If that number is bigger than the actual weight, you pay for the bigger number. That's why a huge box of cushions costs more to ship than its weight suggests.
Every courier, city, and volume tier has different rates, and they change often. Hardcoded rates would go stale in months — your own rate card keeps estimates honest.
